Recently, when a Dallas sports radio host celebrated a milestone show, he was surprised when a special guest phoned in for a live congratulatory call. It was President George W. Bush. I was surprised as well, but if you’ll remember, President Bush once owned this area’s baseball club, the Texas Rangers.

EssayBack in high school, I used to frequently look at a site that listed its own Academy Awards. It had typical categories as well as some more unique ones. What appealed to me was that it praised the type of films I was interested in: Magnolia, Traffic, Dancer in the Dark, Being John Malkovich….

EssayI’ve mentioned before that PT Anderson’s Boogie Nights is one of the few movies I can think of that can make me cheer at a close-up. You can feel the joy that Anderson has when he makes his films; the shots may be on the indulgent side of things, but you get the sense that he says, “Who cares? Let’s do it.”

EssayI’m a sucker for a good Blog-A-Thon. I love the variety that you get and the satisfaction that comes from knowing that people are at least taking your viewpoint into consideration. Today, Piper at LAZY EYE THEATRE starts his Bizarro Blog-A-Thon.
First off, I made my own custom banner for the occasion.

EssayBack in 2006, I wrote a fairly harsh review of M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Lady in the Water.
→If you look at Lady in the Water, it’s easy to tell that Shyamalan can do this sort of material—he can practically do it in his sleep, if you ask me. The problem is that he may have overslept.

EssayThe music to the Star Wars Saga is absolutely iconic.
The main theme is one of the most recognizable pieces of music, possibly ever. And who doesn’t think of the Imperial March when you know someone (a boss, a wife) is about to rain down fire and brimstone?

EssayIt’s trendy to hate Baz Luhrman’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. I don’t.
But that’s not the point of this entry, because whether you like the film or not, it’s hard to ignore its style. The art direction in this film is hip, flashy, and when you break it down, it’s downright cool.

EssayKrzysztof Kieslowski excelled in making films that were thematically rich. We all know that The Decalogue is based on the Ten Commandments while Three Colors based three films on what each color of the French flag represents. And we know that at the time of his death, he was busy writing another trilogy, Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory, which has been two-thirds finished.

EssayThis entry was originally submitted as a comment to a post on Jim Emerson’s Scanners blog, and is referencing one of Andy Horbal’s recent posts, submitted to Jim’s Contrarian Blog-A-Thon.
Jim,
I know you are referencing in part Andy Horbal’s post about blogs and blog-a-thons (regarding structure and the way we go about doing all of this).

EssayI always thought that it was weird when kids in elementary school would hand out Valentines to everyone in the class, even to the ones of the same sex—not in the homophobic sense, but merely in a confused sense. In high school, I made a point of having very few male friends; I wasn’t a “buddy” guy.
